Thanks Sexcrab, nycboot and everyone else for the positive comments. Yes, the humour is intentional - glad you enjoyed it...

I don't know if you intended it, but I found this hysterical. So many jokes (e.g. "...not being able to see one’s own reflection in a mirror was such a dammed nuisance"). Very different mood - almost satirical - from your previous stories. I'm interested in seeing if you continue that mood. It is very amusing. :)

Your stories' settings are so pitch-perfect in how they capture time and place that anything that seems a bit off is undeservedly jarring. In part 6 of The Restoration, Howard writes from Paris that he's had to resort to smoking Winstons "brought over from home." I'd always considered Winston to be a mid-1950s brand (1954 if the Wikipedia entry is to be trusted) and the Howard-Stephen narrative begins in 1949, continuing as written for only a year or two. Howard would more likely have imported classics like Philip Morris, Lucky Strike, Chesterfield, Old Gold, or--God forbid--Camels. (I'm a non-smoker, but the descriptors I've heard attached to Camels are not suitable for posting on a family-friendly web site like this one. Maybe Howard would smoke Camels to hide his sexuality. Then again, Gauloises seemed to be compatible with 1950s French intellectuals of all sexualities.) As for Raleighs, Parliaments, and Tareytons (all on the market in 1950), would any considerate American be seen flaunting these brands in France...or in Britain? Based on the volume of free distribution to US Army bases in western Europe at the time, I'd guess that Luckies or Camels would have been the most widely known US brands on the continent at the time. This information would be of some value only if you plan to submit the story elsewhere. Otherwise, I'll just thank you once again for your writing and bug off.
