That final scene... of the five of them together ... it had such a beautiful feeling of love and family. I cant begin to imagine how you got me to that spot. There was so many things that are taboo that you successfully wrote away. What a gift you have for writing. THANK YOU for this wonderful story that was so well written. I love your writing. INPUT from a married guy: I love anything that helps me "feel" the smells of the sex or the men or the room. I find myself inhaling deeply trying to imagine the smells of those handsome men - their workout scent, their post sex smells. Don't hesitate to bring me there with your amazing words! THANKS AGAIN! I loved it.

@[MChicago](/user/show/10024403) Thanks man for the lovely comment. Though I'm slightly terrified/bemused by the line "so many things that are taboo that you successfully wrote away." Good lord, what have I done? He he

As I read this, I was hoping that Daniel would end up undergoing the process himself, and you absolutely delivered!

@[Pcm](/user/show/10039396) You are very right that it's likely most-if not all westerners would likely be converted willingly- the beastblood breeding campaign was done for that purpose. I think that some folk like Ruby could hide if they managed to avoid getting killed- but it's entirely possible that if Ruby gets converted (as per your headcanon), that they'd be found out rather quickly- having safe spots and the like revealed. As for Ruby and Gil's dynamic, I feel the tea time point I mentioned would highlight Gil's desire for his family and loved ones and his kindness, but not above being manipulative to get what he wants- he could use Ruby's feelings for Rudolf as a way to nudge her, or have her question just how chivalrous and compassionate the east was- or if they were being hypocrites (and honestly the latter point isn't even a lie as we see with Daniel)- but he's also doing this because he wants Rudolf to be happy and to some extent- for Ruby to stop being so miserable. I'm glad you found that dynamic fitting. The idea of the easterners becoming acolytes in the west and being rewarded by shifting makes sense. Gil I can imagine would be very heavily involved in such a process or the logistics involved in maintaining it. The fact that the diplomat serves as a scribe also opens up the possibility of beastfolk culture, arts, literature and legal codes. Which makes sense- they are a society unto themselves and would have those things. But it's fascinating to ponder. It also would open up the ability of sending sleeper agents back east, which we saw with Henriette. As for Daniel, I would argue that if any corruptions happen, they'd be of the mind rather than the body primarily. Daniel's main trait is that his desire for humanity's survival has led to him having no compassion for humanity. It's likely that as the situation grows more desperate, he'd likely become more tyrannical and harsh- possibly even ordering mass suicides of his men or civilians in areas that are deemed lost causes to avoid the enemy gaining more numbers- leading to the horror possibilities I mentioned of a shifted looking for his loved ones to convert only to find them dead- either willingly by their own hand, or because soldiers inflicted such upon them and then later upon themselves. This would then also tie into the idea of the grieving exile being found by a shifted love one who has to convince them to shift but can't force it or the unshifted will die through assisted suicide (poison or the like), but leaving them to drown and die slowly due to their grief isn't an option either. In the post-apocalyptic narrative I imagined, I saw him as learning how to control his reincarnation cycles (test tube babies or hosts ready for the soul to be shifted over) and essentially become a ruthless king of the remaining humans- focusing on survival at all costs- ignoring the individual costs for such. Or in his desperation to stopping the demons makes a magical WMD/nuke that essentially works a little to well and pretty much starts a localized extinction event. He might also start experimenting on people to see who can "resist" being corrupted. So your idea that they wind up being "corrupted" in a way is entirely possible. But you'll likely be focusing more on the transformed winning (which in itself is a positive considering retaining of loved ones), and I'm eager to see whatever unfolds.

@[Anon](/user/show/10049352) I don't think the beastmen would kill the easterners living in the west even unconverted. They would, like you said, be put in an awkward position where they weren't really a part of the pack but their family would want them to stay nevertheless. Now that their conversion is possible, if the unconverted easternerd have loved ones within the West, they would be "persuaded" to join eventually. Aside from the western sympathizers, there are likely a dedicated gtoup of human fanatics who just want to be converted into beastmen themsrlces to escape shackles of humanity. Just like there will be humans who want to be demonified. I am somewhat occupied again, and real life has been meddling with my creativity a bit. It might be some time until the next chapter of knightly duties, titled "a champion's duty", comes out. I'm sorry about tgat.

@[Pcm](/user/show/10039396) no worries, real life is important

@[Pcm](/user/show/10039396) Oh the beastfolk definitely won't- I agree with you on this. They want them alive to convert them- killing them goes against their objectives- they'd only do that if they started openly fighting them or trying to eliminate them like with the knightly expedition 50 years ago. And those with relatives in the west likely will wind up having a higher chance of being converted themselves as they can be more easily convinced that it isn't bad to be converted. When I speak of deaths, I speak moreso about those who are faithful to the eastern orthodoxy possibly with no western situated relatives choosing death or exile over conversion because that would be soul-saving from their perspective (I can easily see Daniel resorting to this as he grows desperate to stymie enemy force growth and more unhinged)- hence my musings of perhaps somebody from those groups (the hyper orthodox ones) being converted and realizing it's not so bad to be a beast, and going to find their loved ones to help them out as well, and finding them dead either due to self-infliction wounds due to them fearing the oncoming beastfolk invasion which has come close to them (not due to beastfolk aggression), or taking on the role of the grieving exile (the one who is living isolated and will either kill themselves to avoid conversion and has to be slowly convinced once found by a shifted loved one- like with Ruby and Gil in your headcanon if she's converted- though she isn't desperate to that degree). Of course, these are more bleak outcomes- and you likely won't be exploring these, but it's something I tend to ponder over. And frankly, it's likely the beastfolk won't aim to kill unless they have to, or are commanded to. Conversion takes priority in this case. Daniel likely would use the massive and bloody defeat of the expedition 50 years ago likely as propaganda to sway those near him that death is better than conversion- we already saw him advocate for killing Aaron- so there's a baseline he could expand on in that matter. And there definitely will be fanatics that want to become beasts, as well as likely those going for the demons too- alongside daniel's faction which will likely be the "pro-human" faction, but will probably get pretty wonky itself. Please, take your time with the story. Real life comes first, as always. I'll be eagerly awaiting whatever comes next. If this is the tourney arc...I suspect we might start to see some of the western sleeper agents and sympathizers- tourneys were big business in the old days and attracted lots of people- it would work out in my understanding at least. Though quick question- the landed knight we saw in Knightly duties- when he got transformed- did he essentially get a dad bod to speak of- him and his squire Tristan? He's muscular but somewhat fat, right? Is it like a sumo wrestler? When I read that chapter I was trying really hard to picture it and for some reason I got a mental image of somebody morbidly obese and essentially unable to even more- I literally had a mental image of him at the banquet essentially falling off his chair onto the table a hypothetical....which I'm very sure is not the right way to imagine him.
